CRITS: your critiques and comments

Here are a few of the comments we have received on the Skinidin Sessions. We put our hearts and souls into the writing and recording of our home-made EP, and would love to know if any of you who have listened to it, feel some of what we experienced. If you'd like to comment on anything two-step algae, please do so here.

Interpol, Pavement, Tindersticks, and best of all, Adam Green. Maybe even a bit Mike Skinnerish(kill me if you like). Really like what you've done, well up my street, and attention to detail is beautiful. Its all in the detail and the drummin. Chris you have pulled off "the second best guitar solo in the world."
Iain Kelly

Well, this is my cup of tea. At least I've listened with pleasure to a lot of music which probably inspired this band. So far i've listened to Tk3 and Tk4. The production is pretty good and suits the material quite well. I liked track 4 more than 3 but wanted the vocal to really tell the story rather than read it, if you know what I mean. I thought the snare sounded a bit cardboard on this track - probably the way it was tuned/played more than your recording. I'll try and give the others a listen when I have some time - I quite like it. John Peel would've probably given it an airing on the radio but now he's gone (may he rest in music) this kind of creativity is going even further underground.

Out of interest: How much 'production' input did you have with this recording? They sound to me like they need a bit of coaxing to get that extra 10% out of them. It's a difficult job, depending on how well you know the group, and it's delicate to get involved with some peoples creative mind, but can be very rewarding for the musical relationship.

  1. Not my cup of tea
  2. Was it worth doing? - definitely
  3. Is it the next big thing? - not on current UK listening form.
  4. Something made me think of Leonard Cohen.
  5. I liked the idea of using the weather.
  6. A little more variation on the next offerings would be good.

Hey guys, Im the other half of the disband - Nick told me about you and I really dig what you're up to. Amazing use of our creative commons license, White Fridge is Empty is really beatiful (T-SA: Well spotted! In case anyone is interested, "a bit" of "white fridge" is swiped from a song The Disband did called "The Whole Room is Silent". We like them, and you can read more about them, download songs and get involved with their project here).

Nice website and the number one google result for "two step algae". you may already know, but graffiti image #4 is the lyrics to a pulp song, "the night that minnie timperley died". I am afraid I rather chewed and pulled on the last cd sleeve you sent me - but my daddy said it was well cool before I got to it!
Wizzo

...nice job!

...thanks for the awesome album guys. I understand why it took so long now... v impressed... really makes me laugh Chris when i listened to the lyrics... (T-SA: here I am pouring my heart out, and you laugh at me!)
Rick Air on "Sknidin Sessions"

Reminiscent of Slint, but unmistakably Two-Step, this track is a gentle rant about things not going to plan. The intimate nature of the song is matched by the production, leaving you to believe this to be a question/answer session with some higher purpose.
Dan Lavender on "Hurts"

"Hurts" is a perfect example of why lo-fi is the most powerful genre you are ever likely to find. It is one of the biggest and one of the smallest tracks I've come across in a long time - the weight of the sentiment, carried quietly and without pretence, is offset by the shaking of a big kick and rolling open hat in turns. Hearing it throws you from being moved to empathy at our frailty in the face of others, to feeling the grounding power at the centre of us - a power which can force something beautiful out of the mire. Only those who have tried to really be creative can attest to the huge challenge of saying what you really mean. Both lyrically and musically this track is completely clear, and Two-Step Algae can, and should, hardly wish for anything more.
Nick Parker on "Hurts"
